Kudremukh: Where the Western Ghats Get Serious

7 min read · Multi-Day Trek · Karnataka · Updated June 2026  |  Plan this trip →

Kudremukh makes Skandagiri look like a warm-up. "Horse face" in Kannada, it's Karnataka's third-highest peak at 1,894 m, sitting inside a UNESCO-listed national park recognised as one of the world's 25 biodiversity hotspots. The shola forests and rolling grasslands here look nothing like the dry Deccan plateau 300 km away — and the best time to see it is monsoon, when most people are looking for reasons to stay indoors.

Why People Climb Kudremukh

The horse-face profile that gives the mountain its name is visible from the summit ridge, but the real draw is the shola forest — dense, ancient evergreen patches unique to the Western Ghats, with canopy thick enough to stay dry underneath even in light rain. Partway up, the forest opens onto Ontimara, a single lone tree standing in open grassland that's become the iconic image of the trek almost by accident. On a clear day, the summit delivers a 360° Western Ghats horizon with the Bhadra river visible far below.

Why This Ecosystem Matters

Kudremukh National Park sits inside one of the world's 25 recognised biodiversity hotspots, and the shola-grassland mosaic here is a genuinely rare habitat type — pockets of dense forest in folds of the terrain, surrounded by open rolling grassland, found almost nowhere else at this density. Monsoon rainfall is what sustains it, which is also why the best trekking season here inverts the usual rule: most treks recommend avoiding the rain, but Kudremukh is built for it.

What You Might See Along the Trail

This isn't a rare-sighting situation — lion-tailed macaque and Malabar giant squirrel are genuine, documented wildlife here, not exceptional luck. The park is also an active elephant corridor, which is why staying strictly with your guide isn't a suggestion so much as the actual rule.

Before You Go

What the Trek Actually Feels Like

The first few kilometres move through dense shola forest with the canopy muffling the outside world almost completely, broken up by frequent stream crossings. The forest opens gradually into grassland, and Ontimara appears suddenly in the middle of an open meadow — as photogenic in person as in every photo you've seen of it. The final ridge to the summit is open and exposed, with the valley falling away on both sides. Most trekkers stay overnight at Kudremukh village rather than attempting the full 18 km return in a single punishing day.

Getting There

Drive from Bengaluru via Chikkamagaluru — about 340 km and 7 hours, with the final stretch a winding mountain road. Most groups do an overnight drive on Friday and trek Saturday. There's no public transport to the park checkpoint, so this is a private-vehicle or operator-bus trek either way. Booking is online only at aranyavihaara.karnataka.gov.in.

Same Aranya Vihaara permit system covers Skandagiri, roughly 300 km east — a natural pairing if you're building a longer Karnataka trekking loop, even though the two treks feel almost nothing alike day to day.
