Suryanar Kovil (Sun) is the circuit's most architecturally complete stop — the only temple where all nine Navagraha deities sit in separate shrines facing their own directions, rather than the usual grouping. Kanjanur (Venus), just 6 km away, is calm and uncrowded, with Shiva worshipped as Agneeswarar. Thingalur (Moon), 8 km from Papanasam, is one of the quietest stops in the entire nine-temple circuit. Thirunageswaram (Rahu), only 6 km from Kumbakonam, is the busiest of the four by far, known for its color-changing milk abhishekam.
Start with Suryanar Kovil, then Kanjanur (6 km away), then Thingalur, finishing at Thirunageswaram closest to Kumbakonam — or reverse the order depending on where you're staying. A single morning, starting by 7 or 8 AM, comfortably covers all four before the midday temple breaks begin around 12:30 or 1 PM.
Avoid combining this loop with a Sunday, Friday, or Amavasai (new moon) visit if you want a calm day — Suryanar Kovil gets busy on Sundays, Kanjanur on Fridays, and Thirunageswaram is heavily crowded on Amavasai regardless of day. Any other weekday works well for all four.
