Ram Ghat, Chitrakoot: Where Rama Bathed in the Mandakini

5 min read · Chitrakoot, Rama's Exile · Updated October 2026  |  Plan this trip →

Ram Ghat sits on the Mandakini river in Chitrakoot, at the point tradition holds Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana bathed daily during their years here in forest exile. Unlike some of the more purely devotional sites nearby, Ram Ghat has a genuine second life today as one of the town's most scenic and simply pleasant spots -- a place locals and visitors alike come to for the evening light on the water, independent of the mythology.

It's one of four distinct Chitrakoot sites from this same exile period, alongside Kamadgiri, Gupt Godavari, and Hanuman Dhara.

Quick Facts

A Daily Ritual, Still Visible

The ghat's steps descend directly into the Mandakini, and the bathing tradition associated with Rama and Sita here continues in spirit -- pilgrims still bathe at the same steps as part of a Chitrakoot visit, treating the river itself as sacred by association.

Boat Rides and Sunset

Boat rides along this stretch of the Mandakini are a popular, low-key activity, and sunset is reliably the best time to be on the water -- the ghats and surrounding hills catch the light well, and the crowds thin out from the midday peak.

Pairing with the Rest of Chitrakoot

Ram Ghat sits close enough to Kamadgiri and the other Chitrakoot sites to combine easily into a single day's loop; most visitors treat it as either the opening or closing stop of that loop, depending on whether they prefer mornings or sunsets on the water.
