Seetha Amman: The Garden Where Sita Waited

After Ravana abducted Sita from the forests of Panchavati in India, he brought her to Lanka — but she refused outright to stay inside his own palace, and was kept instead in Ashoka Vatika, a guarded grove outside the capital, named for the ashoka trees that filled it. Sita spent close to a year here, and tradition identifies this exact site, near present-day Nuwara Eliya, as that grove. The stream running through it is where she's said to have bathed; boulders nearby carry markings locals identify as Hanuman's footprints, from the moment he first revealed himself to her here, deep in enemy territory, with news that Rama was coming.

A Garden That's Now a Botanical Reserve

The Hakgala Botanical Garden, immediately adjacent to the temple, is widely identified with the Ashoka Vatika itself — meaning a working, publicly accessible botanical garden today occupies the same ground tradition holds Sita was confined to nearly three thousand years ago. It's one of the more striking overlaps on this entire trail: myth and present-day land use sitting on literally the same acreage, one as captivity, the other as a protected reserve.

A Temple Built by Local Devotion, Not Royal Patronage

Unlike most of the grand temples elsewhere on this trail, the Seetha Amman shrine here is a comparatively modest, locally built structure — colorful, Dravidian in style, built by the local community rather than commissioned by any king or empire. Three black-granite idols of Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana, unearthed from the site some years ago, are now installed inside.

Timings and Visiting

The temple is open roughly 6 AM to 8 PM. Respectful dress with shoulders and knees covered is expected. The altitude here — Nuwara Eliya sits at nearly 1,900 metres — means a warm layer is worth carrying regardless of season.

When to Go

Rama Navami is the most significant day here, drawing pilgrims who travel from India specifically for this date. Outside that, the site is calm and contemplative most of the year, helped by the cool hill-country climate that makes it a pleasant stop regardless of the season.

Getting There

Seetha Amman sits about 5 km from Nuwara Eliya town and pairs naturally with Divurumpola, roughly 25 km away, on the same hill-country leg of the trail.
