Most Navagraha temples are healing sites only in a general astrological sense — worship here, relieve that planetary affliction there. Vaitheeswaran Koil is different: the healing reputation is tied to a specific story that happened at this exact spot. Angarakan, the planet Mars, is said to have suffered from a skin affliction and come here to be cured — by Shiva himself, worshipped in this temple as Vaidyanathar, "the divine physician." That's the actual reason this temple's sacred tank, Siddhamrutha Theertham, is considered curative, and why Mars has his own shrine here rather than just a passing mention.
Mars's own origin story has two competing versions, depending on which tradition you follow. In the Shaiva telling, he was born from drops of Shiva's sweat after the god's grief over Sati's death, raised by the earth goddess Bhumi as her own son — hence his other name, Bhauma, "son of the earth." The Vaishnava version instead ties his birth to Vishnu's Varaha avatar rescuing the earth from a demon. Both traditions agree on one thing: he belongs to the earth itself, which may be part of why a healing tank dug into that same earth became his place of cure.

Tuesday (Angarakan's day) is significantly busier than the rest of the week. Skanda Sashti also draws large crowds. For a calmer visit, any other weekday works.
