Varanasi — Kashi, Banaras — is India's oldest continuously inhabited city. People come here to bathe, to pray, to cremate their dead, and to seek liberation. For travelers, it is overwhelming, beautiful, chaotic, and utterly unlike anywhere else on earth.

The Ghats — Where Varanasi Happens

Walk the 84 ghats at dawn — from Assi Ghat south to Raj Ghat north. You'll see more of Indian life in two hours than anywhere else in the country.

Ganga Aarti

Every evening at Dashashwamedh Ghat — seven large brass lamps, incense, conch shells, Sanskrit chanting. Every single day, regardless of weather. Arrive early or book a boat for the river view. A quieter morning aarti also happens at Assi Ghat — highly recommended.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple

One of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The new corridor (2021) connects directly to the Ganga ghat. Arrive before 6 AM for shorter queues. Mangala Aarti at 3 AM, main darshan from 5 AM to 11 PM.

Sarnath

10 km from Varanasi — where Buddha delivered his first sermon. The Dhamek Stupa marks the spot. The Archaeological Museum has the original Ashoka Capital (India's national emblem). Half a day is sufficient.

Dawn Boat Ride

Hire a rowboat for one hour at dawn from Assi Ghat heading north. The light on the ghats in the first hour after sunrise is extraordinary. The single best thing to do in Varanasi. Price: ₹200-500 for a private boat.

What to Eat

Best Time

October to March. Dev Deepawali (15 days after Diwali, November) — entire ghat frontage lit with millions of diyas. Book 2-3 months ahead for this festival.
