Of the nine Navagraha, only seven are actual celestial bodies. Rahu and Ketu are shadow points — the two places where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's apparent path, not physical objects at all. The remaining seven — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn — are the "classical planets": everything visible to the naked eye in the night sky before the telescope. And the order ancient astronomers placed them in, based purely on how fast each one appeared to move, is the direct, traceable reason a week has seven days, why those days run in the order they do, and even why Saturday comes right before Sunday rather than somewhere else in the sequence.
Ancient observers in Babylon, Egypt, and later Greece tracked how long each visible body took to complete a full circuit against the fixed stars. Ranked from slowest to fastest as seen from Earth, the order is: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. This became known as the Chaldean order, and it isn't arbitrary — it reflects each body's actual distance, since the further out a planet orbits, the slower it appears to crawl across the zodiac.
Saturn earns the "slowest" title because it takes roughly 29.5 years to complete one circuit of the zodiac as seen from Earth — by far the longest of any of the seven. That sluggish, heavy motion is exactly why Sanskrit tradition named it Shani, sometimes glossed as "the slow one," and "Manda" — sluggish — and it's the same observation, arrived at independently in Babylon and Greece, that placed Saturn first in the Chaldean order: farthest, slowest, and therefore ranked at the top of the list before working down to the fastest-moving body of all, the Moon.
Here's where it gets genuinely clever. Hellenistic astrologers — Vettius Valens, writing in the 2nd century CE, is the figure most credited with recording the system — divided each day into 24 hours and assigned a planetary ruler to every single hour, cycling endlessly through the Chaldean order: Saturn rules hour 1, Jupiter hour 2, Mars hour 3, and on through all seven, repeating as needed to fill 24 hours.
Because 24 isn't a multiple of 7, the planet ruling the first hour of the next day isn't the next one in line — it's three places further down the cycle. Run that "skip three" rule seven times in a row, and the planet ruling the first hour of each successive day produces exactly this sequence: Saturn, Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus. That's Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday — the seven-day week, in the order we still use it, derived purely from dividing 24 hours by 7 planets and watching where the remainder falls.
The planets carrying English weekday names are the same seven the Navagraha temples honor, just renamed twice over — once into Greco-Roman gods, then again into Norse ones for the Germanic-language days. Sunday and Monday kept their literal Sun and Moon names outright. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday come from Norse deities loosely matched to Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus by shared character — Tiw (a war god, like Mars), Woden, Thor, and Frigg. Saturday alone kept its Roman name directly: Saturn's day. It's the same seven-planet logic running through Tamil Nadu's Navagraha temples, the Latin-derived day names in French and Spanish, and the English calendar on your phone — three different cultures, the same underlying system.
This is also the cleanest explanation for why Rahu and Ketu have no day of the week and no place in the Chaldean order: they were never part of the seven-planet system that produced the week in the first place. They're a specifically Vedic astrological addition — the Moon's two orbital nodes, mythologized as the severed halves of a single demon — layered onto a nine-graha framework that the seven-planet week never accounted for. Every other tradition that inherited the Chaldean order, from Rome to Scandinavia, stopped at seven.
None of this affects how the Navagraha temples are worshipped, or which day is auspicious for which graha — Saturday belongs to Shani at Thirunallar regardless of whether you think about it through Hellenistic astronomy or Puranic myth. It's simply a second, completely independent explanation for the same nine names: one rooted in devotional story, the other in how fast a point of light crosses the sky.
